Minnesota Viking’s General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s was hired by the organization after an underwhelming 2021-22 season putting an end to Rick Spielman’s tenure as the Viking’s GM. While many questioned the hiring decision at the time it is difficult to critique what he has done so far. The Viking’s posted an impressive 13-4 record last season and made a playoff appearance. While they may have bounced in the first round, the Viking’s GM is certainly not the person to blame.
After being hired after the 2021 season Kwesi Adofo-Mensah had 3 picks in the first 2 rounds of the NFL draft. With those picks the Vikings acquired Lewis Cine, Andrew Booth Jr., and Ed Ingram. Despite not seeing a ton of playing time last season it is fair to say that the draft was an overall success. None of those players appear to be a bust and Lewis Cine is poised to make a name for himself after missing last season due to injury.
Perhaps the most impressive move by Adofo-Mensah has been the mid-season acquisition of star tight end T.J. Hockenson from the Detroit Lions. Hockenson posted impressive stats for the Vikings in the second half of the season and filled a much-needed role as a big-bodied target for Kirk Cousins. The trade seems especially good considering the relatively small value given up to add such an essential piece to the offense.
The 2023 draft was anything but disappointing for Vikings fans as well. With the 23rd overall pick the Vikings selected Jordan Addison who many had ranked as the top wide receiver in the draft class. Jordan Addison won the Biletnikoff Award in 2021 being named the best wide receiver in college football. The pick fills an important hole in the offense created by the departure of Adam Thielen in the offseason. Addison should be the perfect compliment next to Justin Jefferson on the field this year.
All in all Vikings fans should be very happy with their new GM. It’s a BIG upgrade from the perpetually one step behind Rick Spielman.
